Public elected governors

Background/experience

After working within the wheelchair industry, supplying the NHS for over twenty years, I have witnessed both the highs and lows of care provided by the National Health Service. When it is at its best, there is nothing to beat a system that provides free healthcare to anyone who needs it, regardless of status or means. At its worst, the service fails the most vulnerable in society.

I became a governor in the hope that I could use my experiences within the service and my knowledge of the costly, complicated administration system used in the NHS to help to find a way for the community to be better served by a service that is the envy of the world.

Background/experience

I am a marketing communications professional with over ten years’ experience across both the public and private sector at organisations including Dudley Council, Marketing Birmingham and The NEC Group. I have a good understanding of what makes “good governance” and understand the issues currently faced by the public sector. However more importantly I am a Mum to two gorgeous girls both of whom were born at Russells Hall. Before having children I had never been an in-patient at a hospital however, over the last four years I have experienced several stays with both of my children and a number of departments which has given me a new insight to the patient experience.

Background/experience

Friends, hospital patients, and hospital volunteers repeatedly suggested I would be good as a Governor, so I took time to research the role. After much thought, I decided that yes, I would in fact make a good member of the Council of Governors because I genuinely care about others and also, because I have always been very interested in what goes on within the Trust, having previously been a patient and currently a Trust volunteer. Prior to becoming a volunteer I served in the forces for several years before I retired.

My main reason for applying to become a Governor, is because I would like to become more involved in representing the best interests of the local community and contributing to decisions about future services. I live locally, and have lived in the Black Country all my life, so I have a genuine commitment to what goes on in the area.

I enjoy attending training, and happy to attend any courses that would improve my knowledge, understanding and ability to fulfil the role.

Background/experience

Whilst originally from East Sussex I have lived and worked in Halesowen for thirteen years. I am member of the Foundation Trust and after seeing on open evenings the good work that is carried out by all the medical staff across the Trust I would like to help our local communities have access to all help/care that is available to them.

I was employed in the care sector as an administrator for fifteen years working with the elderly I am also a Dementia Friend, I want to represent the views of the Halesowen people who elected me as a governor and I feel very privileged to live amongst them.

I work part time for a charitable housing trust. I am also a volunteer at the Mary Stevens Hospice. I like to think of myself as a thoughtful, quiet person, someone who gets involved and help others wherever I can.

My ideal perfect start to the day is to start with tea and toast listening to the birds. The kinds of people I like to meet are ones who inspire me through their actions.

Background/experience

Firstly thank you to everyone that voted for me – this is my first year as Governor of the hospital.

The meetings are very interesting, offer a steep learning curve – but I can see that there are a lot of dedicated people striving to improve our NHS.

I have an honours degree in Building Surveying and work full time in a construction company. I am a friendly person with a ‘firm but fair’ work ethic.

I am a community person – carrying out many voluntary roles over the years; WRVS at Russells Hall, leader for a children’s holiday camp for ‘deprived’ children, a cub leader, teacher of rookie life guards and leader for Duke of Edinburgh Award.

My hobbies include jogging (I can run for last orders at the bar), cycling, swimming, walking, reading and red wine!

I can only say that I will do my best for the Trust and people of Dudley, being very willing, conscientious and will be raising lots of questions due to my inquisitive mind.

Background/experience

I am delighted to become a Governor as I feel the time is right for me to give something back to the community. Over a period of several years I have personally received excellent medical care from the Trust and its partners.

Professionally I have been involved in a wide range of business development initiatives across all sectors including the care sector. This is my favourite one which I would like to share with you.

Representing the Chamber of Commerce I was a member of the national strategic team formed to work with the Management Charter Initiative on the development of the National Management Development Standards of Best Practice.  I was then given the mission of cascading these standards across all sectors in the Dudley area and to establish a Crediting Competence Centre for Managers. I was also able to give one to one support to staff across all sectors but in particular care homes, nursing homes and GP surgeries.

As a result of these activities I was awarded a Fellowship of the Institute of Leadership and Management.

Personally I am a fundraiser of a voluntary committee trust for a special school making a difference to children with impairments and learning difficulties.

Peter Siviter

Constituency: Public Elected
Representing area: South Staffordshire & Wyre Forest

Background/experience

I worked at the Dudley Group of Hospitals for several years as Business Intelligence Manager before retiring in 2009. I was responsible for producing information to help facilitate agreeing contracts with the Dudley Primary Care Trust as well as all the constituencies including Wyre Forest and South Staffordshire PCTs

Part of my remit was to predict the Trusts activity over a five year period to help with future planning. I helped the Trust gain foundation status and was responsible for collating and returning data to various NHS bodies.

After retiring I joined Stoke PCT with the emphasis in improving their data collection and contracts with North Staffordshire Hospitals.

I have experience of working in the NHS at a senior management level in both Hospitals Trusts and local PCTs.

I believe the staff at Dudley always aim to achieve the best possible outcomes for their patients and create a friendly and positive environment for patients and colleagues.

I am sure my knowledge of the NHS and enthusiasm to improve the service provided would help me become a successful Governor

I play tennis regularly and have been a member of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain having been a judge and lecturer for over 30 years

Arthur Brown

Constituency: Public Elected

Email address: foundationmembers@dgh.nhs.uk
Contact details: (01384) 321124

Background/experience

I feel very privileged to be given the chance to assist in the continuing development of The Dudley Group.

I arrived in England from Jamaica in my teens and work in Industries for 18 years. This includes British Steel Corporation.  Following this I trained as a Social Worker and worked in this profession until I retired.

I am a natural volunteer and have always strived to serve in whatever community I lived in. In addition, I am committed, and, given my experience this has enabled me to understand the needs of the community and will work with others to obtain the best possible service.

Hobbies: The Arts, voluntary work, reading, music, and historic places.

Through my experiences I have gained confidence, counselling skills, and the ability to listen well. I am a Christian and love people.

Background/experience

I am very pleased to have been elected and have the opportunity to contribute towards the general health and well-being of residents in Tipton and Rowley Regis. In addition, I welcome the chance to represent the Trust and to assist in their ongoing success.

My experience as a Teacher and Lecturer has equipped me with a range of transferrable skills which I will use to encourage residents to actively engage in self-help programmes and support empowerment: enabling everyone to take responsibility for their health and well-being.

I have also been an active participant in the following voluntary activities:

  • Midlands Arts Centre, Birmingham (Mac): Training and participation in a range of events.

Contact details: (01384) 321124

Background/experience

I am a retired nurse, midwife and practice nurse. I have always had an interest in people from the time I joined the British Red Cross at the age of thirteen.

My experience with members of the the public is wide and varied. I have been involved with different cultures, religions and social classes. I have worked also with numerous different professionals. With a wide and varied mix of people in the community I am hoping that what I can offer members of the public and the Trust will be to the expectations of the people that have put their trust in me when they voted for me as a governor.
