Classes and support

Various classes are available at Russells Hall Hospital to help you with your pregnancy, labour, becoming new parents and introducing a baby into the family. When attending the hospital for your 12 week scan, maternity support workers will take the opportunity to advise you of these classes, and provide you with a class information sheet for when and where these classes are held. Please refer to this class information leaflet when booking. If you did not have the opportunity to receive this timetable or you need another copy, please speak to your community midwife or download here.

Please book all hospital based classes, including the tour, well in advance. Due to popularity these classes get full very quickly. To reserve your space, please call (01384) 244358 Monday-Friday between 10:00am – 12:30pm.

Unless stated otherwise, all of our classes are held in the maternity outpatients department and you will need to bring your pregnancy notes along with you.

Upon completion of the classes, you will be asked to complete a small satisfaction survey to ensure we always meet your needs and develop our service as required.

Preparation for birth class

Run by community midwives, birth preparation classes are informative sessions which include a presentation and, where possible, a maternity tour to better prepare you for your birth. Information shared will include where to have your baby, understanding the signs and stages of labour, pain relief options, to include waterbirth, alternative modes of delivery, what happens postnatally and more.

Sessions are:

Tuesday evenings 7.00pm until 9.30pm                   Sunday mornings 10.00am until 12.30pm

Tours of the unit

If you would like to look around the Maternity Unit but would prefer not to attend the full birth preparation class, a tour is available some Saturday mornings. A community midwife will meet you at the entrance of the Antenatal Clinic for a prompt 9.15am start. Ensure you book this session as it does not run every week.

Active birth class

Run by the midwives on the Midwifery-led Unit (MLU) who you may meet again at your birth. Active birth classes are tailored for those who are booked for midwife-led care from 36 weeks onward and likely to have their baby on on the MLU. Your community midwife will discuss your suitability to join the class with you. Classes are held on a Monday evening between 7.15pm and 8.30pm. Please call (01384) 456111 extension 3360 to book a class for you and your birth partner. These small and friendly classes are practical sessions so please dress comfortably to enable you to try our birthing equipment and positions, if you would like to.

Breastfeeding workshop and Mom2Mom support

Breastfeeding workshops and Mom2Mom support are held on a Thursday evening from 7.00pm until 9.30pm. All breastfeeding workshops provide the same content of information regarding breastfeeding and so it is only necessary to attend one of these sessions. It is for you to decide who is best to attend with you before booking. If you feel you would benefit from support from your mom or close female relative or friend, please feel free to book them a place with you and your partner. This service is unique to Russells Hall Hospital. Upon completion of this workshop, your female relative or friend can be issued a Mom2Mom Passport to allow them on to the Maternity Unit to support your breastfeeding needs, if appropriate. Please speak to your community midwife for more information.

Grandparents evening

This class is held on the first two Monday evenings of the month (unless a bank holiday) from 7.00pm until 9.30pm and is specifically for grandparents-to-be. It is only necessary to attend one of these sessions. This friendly and relaxed class helps new grandparents, alongside their own daughter and son (in-laws), get up-to-date information about modern approaches for caring for newborn babies safely and supporting new mothers. This could include information on infant feeding, healthy lifestyles, safe sleeping, neonatal resuscitation, baby care and more. Please be mindful when you book this class who would benefit the most because there is a maximum attendance of one pregnant women plus three others. Due to capacity, we cannot accommodate any more. An example would be to attend with you partner and both moms.

Aquanatal classes

Exercise in water taught by midwives with specialist training. Not only does aquanatal keep you fit and active during pregnancy, it also aides relaxation, improves circulation and is very sociable too. Classes are held at Dudley Leisure Centre on Monday mornings from 11.30am until 12.30pm, excluding some school holidays. Ask your community midwife for more information. Please attend at 11.00am for your first session so that the midwife can complete your registration. When attending aquanatal, it is essential you arrive on time and are in the water for 11.30am prompt for the all-important warm up. There is no need to book this class. The leisure centre makes a small charge for admission to the pool.
