Core rotations

Medicine (12 weeks)

In this module students will develop the basic competencies required of all physicians. Students will spend time in the speciality areas of gastrointestinal medicine, renal, cardiology, respiratory and elderly care, as well as spending time on our Emergency Assessment Unit and medical High Dependency Unit.

Obstetrics and gynaecology (6 weeks)

This module helps students understand the role played by obstetrician and gynaecologist physicians in the scope of women’s healthcare. Students will gain a base of knowledge in normal, as well as abnormal, obstetrics and gynaecology and acquire the skills needed to evaluate and treat patients effectively.

Paediatrics (6 weeks)

During this module students will gain the skills and experience needed to understand, evaluate and treat young patients, from newborn through to adolescence. Students will learn the importance of utilising family members to gain a knowledge of patients’ medical history and develop understanding of medical problems common in young people.

Psychiatry (6 weeks)

This module is provided at the neighbouring Bushey Fields Hospital which is run by Dudley and Walsall Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust. Students will learn about the biological, psychological and sociocultural basis of psychiatric disorders and the dynamics of a psychiatric diagnostic evaluation. Students will gain the experience needed to understand, evaluate and treat the entire spectrum of mental health problems.

Surgery (12 weeks)

In this module students are exposed to the clinical problems requiring surgical intervention. As well as observing in the operating theatre, students will gain an understanding of the pathophysiology of surgical diseases and the management of pre and post operative problems. During this module students will spend time in general surgery as well as in the specialty areas of accident and emergency, urology, ophthalmology, anaesthesiology, orthopaedics, and ear nose and throat.
